Creative play might seem like a strange way to behave in the face of our serious world with all of its serious challenges.
But play is how human beings learn, adapt, build empathy,
make sense of things, and break out of limiting mental habits.
Play is also how we keep our spirits light,
especially in the darkest months of the year.

In this three-session series, we’ll come together one Saturday morning a month to spend a delightful hour playing with words, images, and each other through a set of activities curated and guided by Sara Saltee.
What kinds of play?
I want this workshop to be full of suprises, so I’m not going to list the specific activities we’ll do each week, but to give you an example, in the beta workshop we:
Started with a fun body relaxation and wiggling exercise
Collectively created a pool of words we love, picked three, and used them to draft the opening line of a mystery novel, and then a romance novel.
Used a set of provocative images and our brains’ natural ability to make connections and think in metaphors to explore a personal challenge in a fresh way.
“In play, animals, people, or whole societies get to experiment with all sorts of combinations and permutations of body forms, social forms, thought forms, images, and rules…
A creature that plays is more readily adaptable to changing contexts and conditions. Play as free improvisation sharpens our capacity to deal with a changing world.”
Some details for you:
We’ll try out different activities in each Creative Playground session - so each gathering will be a completely different experience!
All our play will happen within the hour we’re together - no homework or assignments!
No special supplies are needed. You won’t need anything you don’t already have lying around the house (like pens, scissors, paper, maybe a glue stick…). I’ll send out supply and prep lists as needed via email prior to each session so you’ll have time to gather what you’ll need.
